I was at the gas station earlier refilling my gas containers. The generator burned through a bit of gas since we lost power on Monday. LIPA was around the corner an hour ago removing lines from a downed tree. The lineman told my neighbor we are looking at another 10-14 days without power. I'll be making a lot of trips to the gas station.
Yikes. Are you in Nassau or Suffolk?

Power being restored seems to be a crapshoot. Most family and friends are still without.

Guys, just a quick question....
We don't need to worry about pipes freezing right ? It was 56 inside my house today in the morning.... (without power of course), and its going to go to low 30s outside on Sunday/Monday as per weather.com....

In regards to contaminated water, boiling only kills living organisms but does not remove contaminants such as oil, fertilizers, and other chemicals.

Water freezes at 32 degrees. No exceptions.

I've had pipes freeze, and it was after days on end of temps under 10 degrees (even during the day) and we had a small hole in the copper flashing of our roof that was sending cold air right along the pipes; northern exposure so no sunlight either.

Even if the temps go below 32, they probably won't freeze in the short amount of time that it is that temp. You can leave a trickle running if you are able to and you're really worried.

Worried about my friends and family who I can only talk to occasionally - txts seem to only get through intermittently. I'm hearing unbelievable stories of gas stations running out of gas, small pockets of looting, and persons impersonating national guard/power employees robbing houses. It's unsettling, especially when thinking about the elderly in cold dark houses on pitch black blocks and no real ETA on when things will get back online.

Stay safe folks.
