You know it's bad when our fire department is asking for his assistance. I keep telling my kids that their daddy wears a cape. (My husband did commercial tree work for a number of years and owns a front loader, so he's pretty darn good at dropping & clearing trees.)
We started out with 45 gallons of fuel on hand, but my husband says he would have dumped two of our other jerry cans filled with diesel into our oil tanks and filled them with fuel as well. But given that my husband arrived home Saturday night from a two week trip in Asia and we were thrown some 'speed bumps' on Sunday in regards to preparation for the storm, we were still pretty well prepared. (The neighbors come to us when they need help with something.)
The one thing that will probably be different for any other future storms is that we'll be switching to natural gas (we were doing this prior to Sandy) and intend to install a whole house generator (again, we intended to do this prior to Sandy.)
I just have to make sure my husband is in the country when a storm hits.

Get my propane generator, have at least 3 tanks of propane available
Hoard gas, at least 30 gallons.
invest in a hand crank battery charger for cell phones.
kerosene heater and fuel to go with
I was prepared as well as I could, I had
Full tanks of gas in both cars
all clothes were washed and dried
I had canned goods and parmalat milk
cereal and snacks
plenty of LED flashlights and batteries just in case
Radio
bottled water
cell phone was charged
The only thing I did not have was a generator and we are looking to get one hardwired into the house and have it run on natural gas.
A kerosene heater and a small generator to keep the phones/laptops charged.
Oh yeah, and those battery-powered wall light things that you press to turn on; can't remember their name but they sell them in some dollar stores.
I am such a knuckhead!! I have those lights!!! I keep one in the coat closet because there's no light fixture at the front door entry. I think I'll stock up on a few more of those and keep them with the flashlights.

What are the amps on the propane generators? Can they handle a fridge? I know many can handle a fridge and maybe 1 or 2 small electric items.
Both cars filled with gas.
Froze water bottles and used them as ice.
Filled up spare propane to cook on the grill.
Had a bunch of LED camping lights with batteries.
Had inverter and extension cord ready.
But next time I will add...
Gas generator fed into transfer switch.
A weeks worth of gas for generator.
Battery charger for LED lights.
Baby wipes. Good enough for the military when in the field, good enough for an alternative method of staying clean.
