We've already tried that before anyway.

Remember LILCO? The private company? And how they milked the public for the highest rates in the nation at that time and all they spent money on was lavish executive compensation and shareholder profits?

Maybe you are too young to remember what went on with LILCO. It was a horror.

I think, private or public, what the electricity provider on LI needs first and foremost is strict oversight.
LILCO's rates only got out of control because Cuomo's father was intent on keeping Shoreham from operating, so after LILCO sunk so much $$ into Shoreham, they had to shut it down. Had Mario Cuomo not stopped Shoreham, we'd have had lower electric rates because we'd have cheaper power from Shoreham, and LILCO would probably still be around. The Cuomo clan is the reason why we have LIPA, Cuomo is busy pointing fingers at everyone but himself. His father put the wheels in motion for LIPA when he stood in the way of Shoreham, and Andy hasn't appointed any new LIPA board members. What needs to happen is LIPA to be completely dissolved, and given to PSEG to run and control. When you look at the other electric companies in our region, they performed much better in both Sandy and the Nor'easter, with faster recovery from outages, and a lower percentage of power loss. PSEG, Con Ed, and First Energy/JCP&L have much more modern power grids, with spacer cable lines. They do a better job clearing trees from the lines. LIPA has a power infrastructure that dates back to the 1950s.
I do not blame LILCO for our power woes. They foresaw the growth of LI, that's why they built Shoreham and planned for a 2nd reactor in Jamesport, but Mario Cuomo and NIMBYs disguised as environmentalists (Amper/Pine Barrens Society) shut it down, saddling LILCO with decomissioning costs which were put onto ratepayers. Funny how these "environmentalists" could care less about stopping the Riverhead Super-Walmart on Pine Barrens, or the old, polluting fossil fuel plants like Northport and Port Jeff, which would've been replaced by cleaner nuclear power. Andrew Cuomo is now intent on doing the same by trying to shut down Indian Point! I think we should all remember when Cuomo is up for re-election, and make a statement that we are not fooled by his lies!

Is there an icon for throwing up?
Actually the NRC granted full permission and Mario Cuomo and NIMBYs stuck their asses in the way. Mr.Richard Kessel, a fatass apointee from the Cuomo admin, interfered with LILCO, and the NRC by forcing LILCO to shut down the plant. And then Kessel was the head of LIPA, remember that?
Just imagine is Cuomo Sr kept his ass out of it? Shoreham and Jamesport would have been providing LI with cheap, clean energy, electric rates would be lower, and LILCO would probably have partnered with larger companies like First Energy and we'd have had a more modern power infrastructure.
But instead, LILCO was bankrupt by the state, power grid modernization ground to a halt, and rates went up as ratepayers were forced to pay the Shoreham debt along with having to import a majority of our energy from JCP&L (Neptune) and ConEd(Y49&50)!

Great insight, John! But you may be too young to understand it all.

The NIMBYs were relentless. They were complaining about an evacuation plan. Nevermind there were and still are two nuclear power plants of which LI is squarely in the red zone for. Cuomo gave LI'ers a choice: allow Shoreham to operate or pay for its closure. NIMBYs made their choice with their hysteria.

PS: Guess where Kessel is now? Kicked up the ladder as head of New York Power Authority. All this for a man who never worked a day in his life at a utility pre-LIPA.

PPS: LILCO was the highest electric rates in the nation pre-Shoreham fiasco. They were all about executive comp and shareholder profits.
