For what it's worth, I'm an English teacher and focus many of my lessons on formal grammar. Long Island is both an island and a region; therefore, both are acceptable, though with different connotations. If you consider LI an island more than an official region, then you'd say "...ON Long Island." If you consider it a region more than simply an island (which I think most people do), then you'd say "...IN Long Island." The important thing in language, though, is consistency. Choose one and stick with it...

My city relatives used to go out to the Island, or they would say "out to the country".

I vote on.

Excellent insight Phil G

That makes sense.

I think its safe to assume that Natives live ON Long Island and the rest of HeeHaw thinks of us as a place to be IN.

Grammatically speaking, ON is correct.

We live ON Long Island. To live in LI would infer that we are subterranian earth dwellers.

We live in a community -- You live in Rocky Point, I live in Stony Brook, etc., it is a defined place.

We live on a road (street, avenue.) To say in the road would mean either the middle of the street or imbedded in the asphalt.

We live in a house (home, apartment.) To say on a house would be akin to Snoopy sitting atop his doghouse.

Long Islander's always say ON Long Island. Other people say IN. That's how I can tell if they are from around here or not.
