My serious recommendation - a large Superama AND Bodega Aurrera, both at the dying Hicksville mall and right outside the Freeport LIRR. Surround them with El Portions, Vips, Banco Walmart ect.
Actually I think two or three just in Suffolk would do. The idea would be to move away from an economy that depends on commuting to NYC.
1. Giant casino complex with entertainment/arena.
2. Legalize MMA in NY (soon to happen regardless).
Siphon fight money from NYC (after legalization, MSG will be the pinnacle of the biggest UFC and pay per view events in the world), Connecticut and Jersey. It's GOING to happen anyway. Get in front and make the $, or Nimby squabble and lose?!
Neither, Long Island will stay the way it is.
The problem it now has as a tourist destination is that there's no there, there. If the East End had some nice hotels/casinos close to the natural gifts Long Island has I could see people heading there.
I've said it a hundred times, we need a Disney World or some kind of major tourism amusement attraction. The beach thing gets old quick. There is nothing here.
