Exactly when and where I did. Two blocks north of the South Shore Mall in Bay Shore in the 1960's. They were building the mall when I was small and we played every Sunday on the biggest dirt mountains "in the world". We climbed and in our minds drove all the graters and bulldozers as they were just left unattended without security then. It was great. Then when I was a bit older the Sunrise Hwy was expanded and it also was cool place to explore...giant mountains of dirt, long tunnels to crawl thru and even an old man who would chase us on our sting rays. Then in 1972 I discovered weed...... all that stopped. Veg out time in Oakwood Cemetery.
Same place I did - Huntington...right outside the village (sorry Walter). Could go sledding in the woods in the winter, play in the street in the summer, walk everywhere and bike down to the village to hang out.
Unless someone had a heinous childhood I'm not sure this is something they'd change....until the HS years, when everyone thinks someplace else is cooler/better. I can see what Crooks is getting at there.
I wish I could've grown up somewhere on the Nassau side of the Nassau-Queens border.
They get to enjoy the city more due to close proximatey..
And a lot of them have an elite attitude that I strangely seemed to have liked at the time. Kind've like, this is the "rich version" of Queens (which they are kinda correct about)
