I'd rethink Bayville. Truly.

Keep looking in the North Shore District. New houses are coming on the market now that it is spring. Pickin's were slim during the winter.

I've always thought Bayville could be made much more accessible if there was a bridge from Centre Island to Lloyd's Neck to give Bayville quicker access to Huntington

OP: You will not be happy trying to commute from Bayville to lower Manhattan and you won't see much of your family during the week. Also, I believe that Bayville was entirely cut off from the mainland during Hurricane Sandy. Shore Road was out on the eastern side and to the west, there was apparently considerable flooding across the main road. If you Google a bit, you can check the flood maps and see how parts of the village fared during Sandy.

The talk is that Locust Valley schools have gone from decent to very good, but that may be more due to the superintendent's PR skills than to educational advances. When she took office, residents started to get elaborate glossy newsletters promoting everything that moved. If an individual kid went from a C to a B in one course, you could almost expect to see a story on it in the newsletter. Just keep in mind that it costs a whopping $35K+ per year to educate every single child in the district. By comparison, tuition at the renowned Friends Academy nearby runs about $20-$28K+, depending on grade. For that matter, Harvard undergraduate tuition is just over $37K. At the same time the district is losing enrollment, expenses continue to go up. So while there may be some recent educational improvements, the district does a lousy job of managing its finances.

I would agree with some of the others on different target communities for you. Bayville isn't the best choice.

I've heard that people in the Bayville/LV area drive to Manhasset, park at the station, and take the Port Washington Line to Penn Station.

You are very perceptive. Not surprised at all that she's a slick Kate Murray-like publicity hound. Anna Hunderfund is married to a school superintendant who retired and is collecting a six-figure pension PLUS is also working as the superintendant of Malverne SD at something like a mere $250,000 a year, James Hunderfund. These two are living like rock stars, all on the taxpayer dime and they know every angle imaginable to keep their oversized paydays coming. So spending your money for the sole purpose of keep her face out there isn't a surprise.

Yes, the Hunderfunds are known as the "million-dollar couple," thanks to the taxpayers. Oh, and a lot of the district taxpayers may not know it, but she retains a PR firm that's also paid for by residents.

Yes, it can be done. But driving from Bayville to Manhasset is something like a 30-mile round trip. And then you have to rent a parking space from a church or gas station. Church spaces were running around $250 per month over 10 years ago. I can't imagine what they cost now . . . if any are available.

Actually, a large number of Long Island districts retain PR firms at thousands of dollars a year to play up the good news and play down the bad, and to manage the districts' web sites. Most taxpayers aren't aware of it because the expense is usually buried in some other line item, such as "administration."

What's sad about this is that a really good school district would have English or Communications teachers instruct students in producing the district newsletter and managing the web site. That would give the kids some real-world experience and marketable skills. However, the result might not be professional enough to allow the superintendents to continue to bamboozle taxpayers.
