I currently have 2 cable boxes: one is Scientific Atlanta, the other is Samsung. I got them when they offered free boxes for a year because they took away the stations you could get without a box. Now that my free box is expiring, I plan to get rid of one box. To be honest, I mostly only use 1 TV, and I don't want to pay for a second box.

My question is: which box is better: Scientific Atlanta, or Samsung? Cablevision claims that the Samsung boxes are better, but I don't know if there is any truth to that. What do you recommend? Thanks.

Quality from unit to unit can differ, even within the same model. Since you've had both of them in your house for an entire year, you're in a better position to compare the quality of these two particular boxes than anyone else.

I've had the Scientific Atlanta box connected to a large TV, and the Samsung box connected to a small TV that I rarely use, so I can't fairly compare the two.

If only there was a way to measure the performance of the Samsung box when hooked up to the larger TV!

The Samsung is Energy Star compliant the Scientific Atlantic is not.

As far as performance, I don't have an opinion.

The real question is "Why are you still on Cablevision?"

Maybe I can try connecting them at the same time and see if there is a difference.

Are there any feature that one box has that the other lacks? Is one more robust than the other?

Scientific Atlanta gives a choice between Fixed, Upconvert 1, Upconvert 2, and Passthrough. Samsung doesn't seem to give that option. What do those options really do?

Scientific Atlanta has more output connections.
