Does anyone have any experience with screening in part of an existing deck? Recently, we visited family down in the Raleigh area. It seems like everyone down there have screen rooms. They really are lovely. Our familys' have one half screened, the other half open. Was wondering if we could do the same right on to our existing deck. The roof would be a bit tricky as we have an overhang. Just looking for some input from anyone on Long Island as to costs, contactors, etc. Would prefer to go wood but looks like that isn't an option. Thanks!
I plan on doing this in about a year or two. The mosquitoes are so bad by me that we cant stay out doors past 5 pm. Its very annoying.
If you have a 2 story house you are in good shape. If you have a ranch like me then its a much bigger project if you want to do it right with a reverse gable out the back for the screen room.
When you find a company that does it, ask them if they screen in pool areas too. That's what I would like to keep my neighbors leaves from falling in my pool everyday.
I live in the Raleigh area and I know you have to have different supports (at least here) than for a deck. But our soil is different - it's clay, not sandy like LI.
My friend here had a screened porch built from scratch and it was about $20K - my parents had their screened in lanai (it's not raised as they live in a ranch) glassed in and that was about $10K. That also involved shoring up the supports because of the weight of the glass.
We have one, and it's one of the things that sold me on the house!

We tried a screened area on our deck and the mosquitoes and other bugs would just come in whenever we opened it... then worse - they are trapped inside. Don't do it just for this reason - it's really not worthwhile.
Honestly though, since a few years ago, those asian tiger mosquitoes in the summer are the 2nd biggest problem on LI (and I'm reading there's a trap out there now: http://web.archive.org/web/200710130...nel%20Trap.pdf). We all know the 1st.
I am sure you will need a bldg permit for this in any town on LI so you can pay extra taxes to fund the town government
