It looks like we'll be relocating to NY for my husband's job and that we'll be there for 1-2 years. We've got two young kids (3yr and 1yr), so I'm more concerned about preschool than school districts right now.
He'll be working in the Jamaica, Queens area, and we'd prefer he not have a long commute (prefer 1/2 hr or less), but I'd also rather a home in a "not-too-dense" location (meaning, I'd like at least a little bit of a yard). Our budget is around $3k per month, maybe a little more for just the right place. Any thoughts on where we should/should not look?
Bellerose, Floral Park, Valley Stream, Elmont, maybe New Hyde Park. Realistically, if you drive, it probably will be more than 1/2 hour door to door. Traffic lights and traffic are unavoidable. The LIRR from Valley Stream train station to Jamaica is about 10 minutes. Of course, a lot depends on where in Jamaica Husband will be working. Kindergarten starts here at age 5 so your 3 year old would be affected by public school choice if you remain here for 2 years. You can get a "little bit of yard" with your budget, but you should be aware that the Long Island/Queens border is a pretty dense area.
Yes, I think you are pretty stuck with those areas if you want to drive to Jamaica in 30 minutes. You can train it from farther out. $3K might be tight in western Nassau though.
It is on par with Freeport and Hempstead, IMO. It's not so great of an area.
lol, that seems like a huge stretch. Maybe you can compare it to Freeport in a few ways but comparing it to Hempstead is really really pushing it.
Elmont has decent to good performing schools and most of the neighborhoods are well kept. Some of the areas off of Hempstead Tpke could be kinda dumpy though but the parts near Dutch Broadway are flawless.
If you don't mind me asking, what part of Elmont do you have experience with? (if u have any)
