I would not recommend trying to push your child ahead. As the mom of a daughter who was born on November 15th, I can tell you that she was always the smallest and youngest in her class. Finally I had her held over in third grade. She was even a good reader, but she was very immature and it was hard to watch her struggle. She was so much better off .
Hi Nancy, thank you for the information, I had found the same problem with my son, but it looks to me some school district in Nassau not supporting held back, how did you proceed this and held your daughter back to repeat 3rd grade? thanks.
Well that's a good catch by you on that one. I think boys are generally the ones that get held back because they tend to be more immature, however since this is Long Island we also hold them back for sports.

My impression is that since most sports have cutoffs based on age, not school grade, it's hard to effectively hold back for sports.
For example, for baseball the cutoff is April 30.
For soccer the cutoff is July 31. Kids who are 4 years old on 7/31/14 are in the U5 (under 5 group) and kids who are 5 years old on 7/31/14 are in the U6 group.

its age appropriate in younger grades for sure. But then you have the parents who complain about those age cutoffs too. Their kid is in 3rd grade, but plays up or down depending on the sport.
