We're interested in re-doing our driveway, walkway, as well as some minor landscaping. We'd like an asphalt driveway with a brick border, a brick walkway with a belgium block border, and we'd like to create some flower beds with belgium blocks around the perimeters. We can add mulch and do the planting ourselves, leaving only the actual construction of the flower beds to be done - no real landscaping.

So here's my question: Who handles this kind of work? What I mean is, does one contractor generally handle the asphalt and the brick/belgium block work, or are these things generally separate and handled by different contractors? Furthermore, is this even a job for a general contractor, or should I be looking into landscape designers? I'm not even sure what a landscape designer actually does, but I get the sense they're just one more person in the mix that needs to get paid. Not to say that they don't provide a valuable service, but for the kind of work I need done, is it necessary?

I don't really know where to start.

Asphalt contractors will do entire job. Recommendations should be through family, friends and if you don't have those than neighbors will do.
