Saturday:

Go to store.

Purchase merchandise.

Go to checkout staffed by late teen girl.

Merchandise is rung up.

Cost = $15.93

Give student of LI schools $20 bill.

Mensa candidate rings $20 into register.

Change is calculated at $4.07

I interrupt the change process by saying I have a dollar bill. Miss Einstein stares at dollar bill. I say "it's easier if you give me a $5 bill now instead of 4 singles."

The Nobel Laureate hands me a $5 bill and closes the register then in a flash of Newtonian brilliance she asks me..."do I also have to give you the 7 cents?"

A perfect example of the quality of education provided by Long Island teachers.

So remember fellow Long Islanders that when you pay your school taxes its for the Children..for the Children.

When it comes to math, either you 'have it' or you don't.

Do you think it takes much to add 1+4.07?

You should've told her that you get the whole $20 back . She was probably 100% focused on getting back to her phone to see her facebook updates and text people back. I think these kids are in another world at the supermarket.

I'm sure her parents drive around with a bumper sticker reading "My child is an Honor Student at Massapequa High School"

Funny! This is because the child prodigies are told to select answers from a), b), c), d) or e). There is no hard calculating or logical thinking required, just guess and you have a 1 in 5 chance of getting it correct.

I love when I'm supposed to get back 69 cents back, I'll give you 6 cents, you give me back 3 quarters - I just get these blank stares......how the heck did they make it past 4th grade?

What if her parents never showed one ounce of interest in her education, so she only did work while in school? That would be the teacher's fault?

What if she went to school in NJ and just moved here?

Let's see...you must be an educator who specializes in teaching probability and statistics..so what do you think the odds are that someone moves to Long Island from New Jersey and it just so happens I run into this child who lacks parental direction?...hmmm, give me the odds of that.
