I’m sure a large portion of us Nassau Countiers are familiar with the horrid intersection of Glen Cove Rd and Jericho Tpke. What makes it so terrible is that it not only sustains constantly heavy traffic, but it is just north of an exit from the westbound Northern State. The vehicles exit northbound onto Glen Cove Rd just south of the intersection, and those of which who wish to turn left onto Jericho Tpke must jump across all four lanes of Glen Cove Rd in less than 300 feet, and considering the amount of northbound traffic on Glen Cove Rd along with the lack of visibility due to its curvature, this often leads to a dangerous situation.

Here is an image of the current intersection:

However, I believe a replacing the intersection with a traffic circle would solve this problem. A traffic circle would not only keep the congestion moving but also eliminate the problem of parkway-exiting vehicles jumping across Glen Cove Rd to turn left, since they would just loop around the traffic circle.
Plus, the southwest corner of the intersection is empty space owned by the county, so the traffic circle can exist and would not disrupt any of the businesses located on the other corners.

Here is what the traffic circle may look like (the red lines would be the new roads, and the blue circle would be the actual traffic circle)

So what do you guys think?

I agree, that intersection is a mess! It's criminal that the exit ramp advertises access to Jericho Turnpike when it's so hard to get to-- especially since westbound motorists on the parkway are most likely going to head west on Jericho Turnpike.

That traffic circle looks too tight to be effective, though. I think you'd need a wider one and/or one with traffic lights.

I actually think it might just be big enough. My plan shows one with a radius of about 150 feet, whereas Columbus Circle in Manhattan has a radius of about 190 feet.

I have a simpler solution, just close the parkway exit, solves most of the problems. Those wanting Jericho Turnpike from the e/b northern have another exit at Glen Cove road less than a mile north. Just make a right and follow Glen Cove Rd south for not much more than a minute and make a right on Jericho. Problem solved. I'm amazed at how many morons getting off the pkwy try to cut off traffic in the left turn lane. That green arrow could be longer though, its way too short. Typical example of the horrid timing of many lights on LI.

Why not just make a right on Jericho after coming off of the Parkway, then turn around, if it's that hard to get over? That's what I do when I leave starbucks and need to go south on GC road.

That intersection is indeed a nightmare but all one has has to do is visit Jones Beach to see that a traffic circle may only make matters worse if that is possible. NY'ERS don't know how to drive a traffic circle especially since most don't understand the meaning of the word yield.

I have another idea... what if the Northern State exit was extended all the way so that it empties directly into said traffic circle?

If you radiated it out to 200 feet, you could have the on and off ramps feed right into the circle. That would mean taking out Starbucks and the gas station-- that's just my wishful thinking

way too much traffic there for a traffic circle....good solution though.

there is one here in Raleigh that they have re designed 3 times since we moved here....NYers are not the only ones who cant use a traffic circle! And when it gets backed up it is really annoying.
