Relying on a map that shows city, town, village and postal zone, but not hamlet, borders, in its weekly (Friday) Community Profile, NEWSDAY once again mistakes the borders of a same-named postal zone for the borders of the community whose name the postal zone "shares".
Here's the NEWSDAY Community Profile:
Mastic Beach, New York: Real Estate, Schools and News (http://www.newsdayinteractive.com/long-island-real-estate/profile.php?community=Mastic+Beach - broken link)
Mastic Beach is a hamlet (unincorporated area) in the southeast section of the Town of Brookhaven, in the south-central part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Mastic Beach in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Mastic; on the east and south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Shirley.
The Hamlet of Mastic Beach has a different border than does the "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" mailing address and not be in Mastic Beach and a place can have other than a "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" mailing address and be in Mastic Beach): places that have a "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach are in the Hamlet of Mastic; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach with a "Shirley, NY 11967" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):
