The rental market is very tight on Long Island at the moment. Short term rentals are very limited, mostly to certain hotel chains.
You won't find anything in your price range in an apartment complex in the areas you mentioned. It will even be difficult (not impossible) finding a "private" rental, i.e. an apartment in someone's house (common on Long Island).
What Elke was saying that with your budget, you might get an efficiency or one bedroom apartment in a private 2 family house. You are not going to be able to rent in an apartment building or low-rise apartment complex with your budget. Apartment buildings and complexes are highly limited throughout Long Island. With many people losing their homes from Hurricane Sandy, the rental market got even tighter. If you are looking for a lease that is less than a year, your only option will be an extended stay hotel.
Melville/Hicksville/Plainview are toward the middle of the island, which is a very tight market for rentals because of that. We had to go about 15 minutes east of Melville to find something.
Complexes on Long Island are very expensive, more expensive then 1200-1400. We currently rent for 1400/all utilities included a month in an apartment in someones house. Those are very common on Long Island.
Most of the apartments on Long Island are one year leases (we just happened to find a month to month lease, but weren't really looking for that).
As everyone mentioned, 1200-1400 for a complex isn't found on Long Island. You'd have to have at least 1700-2000 for a complex, and sometimes that is only a studio apartment.
Come on that rent is good. Try some of the complexes in Lindenhurst. I was renting a 1 bedroom in Lindenhurst across from town hall for $1100 a month.
There are some of those available, but this person is also looking for a short term lease. Those are probably harder to find then 1100 a month complex apartments. Also, OP is coming here in 2 weeks. Would they have enough time to find something in a complex by then? How long ago was that 1100 a month? Also, is the OP looking to move to the South Shore more?
Make sure the landlord is reputable and is current on the mortgage. You don't want to be paying rent on a house and then have it foreclosed on. NY has pretty liberal laws that make it harder for banks to foreclose on someone. It can take years meanwhile owners are pocketing the rents.
If near the coast be wary of repairs made from Hurricane Sandy. Are they done right? Mold removed?
Start out at the extended care place while looking for a house. You don't want to jump into a bad situation.
