At this point I only miss the people in our lives. We've rebuilt nicely where we are but it's taken much longer than expected and we've never truly stopped missing those we've left behind.
I miss how the humidity doesn't break come Sept....you can usually count on that in NY like clockwork. Doesn't happen here for a few more weeks...so "back to school weather" doesn't really exist!
State taxes all pensions regardless of source. Current tax rate is 7% of AGI.
Each community charges annual tax on motor vehicles.. on top of registration fees. The tax rate on my vehicle is $39.50 per 1000 - on a value made up by the State. Naturally, I could NEVER sell my car for the value the State claims.
Our salaries are significantly below those found on Long Island. Yet, our income and property taxes are not that significanly lower... in some cases higher.
NO KAISER ROLLS. What they call kaiser rolls....are the consistency of foam rubber. Nobody knows the meaning of deli at all!!!!!!!
Short term disability is an employEE tax.
Only 5 decent school districts you'd want to live in. However, your taxes would be just as bad as LI's........on a lower salary.
Nice place to visit (in the summer) but you wouldn't want to live here (RI).
Well, I live on LI, but I'll make my guesses on the ex-pats' gripes:
1. Food not as good or varied as LI
2. Too hot in the summer
3. Lack of sophistication of the locals
4. No beaches
5. Lousy entertainment
6. Poor job prospects and/or pay if you still need to work
7. Lousy zoning ("Why does the home next door to my McMansion have a couch on the front porch and junked cars on the front lawn?")
8. Hard to get to a good hub airport for U.S. or international travel
1. Food not as good or varied as LI:
Nope, food is great and varied. Got me a pig picken to go to tomorrow, but tonight it's upscale Indian.
2. Too hot in the summer:
A bit
3. Lack of sophistication of the locals:
Complete opposite here. Lots of blue bloods.
4. No beaches:
Sort of. 90 miles away. But when people go to the beach they often go for a few days.
5. Lousy entertainment:
Great entertainment, especially during the summer.
6. Poor job prospects and/or pay if you still need to work:
Excellent on both, though not as good as it user to be.
7. Lousy zoning ("Why does the home next door to my McMansion have a couch on the front porch and junked cars on the front lawn?") :
Try to get that past the HOA.
8. Hard to get to a good hub airport for U.S. or international travel:
That's one. We're surrounded by hubs but not one ourselves, so it's almost always off to Charlotte or Atlanta if you're going anywhere outside the country.

Which area are you describing?
Edit: Oh, you still live on Long Island. So this is a generalized list of life off of Long Island? Right...
Amused to see some of the most active posters on this board are ex-pats. That speaks volumes, in more ways than one.
Very very interesting
