LMAO at you Moderator cut: implied crude language is v. the ToS regarding the SS Mall and its dreaded clientele!
Guess where I go for the convenience: Green Acres Mall!!!
Or Black Acres Mall as some of you LI xenophobes call it.
Its most publicized crime wave, car theft, was proven to be mostly white people committing insurance fraud. LOL!
If GA Mall and Roosevelt Field have the same store, I will go to GA Mall, not run to RF like many of you would.
I have never felt unsafe or uncomfortable. Being as I just don't give a ish if I see people "from the City" or people of different races, creeds, and colors around. Imagine that!
So maybe some of you who live near SS Mall should just man up already, save some gas and travel time, and enjoy the renovations over there and shop there.
Is it really THAT BAD? How do you know if you don't go there?

OMG you really step foot out of your car there? How many times have you been mugged, car jacked or beaten?

If they're giving it to me for free, I've no problem with the flooding. If I had to pay, there are plenty of other places I would consider before those two.

I frequented Green Acres in the early 80's. Never heard it referred to by the less flattering sobriquet.
I was at the Sears in Green Acres to look at refrigerators during the July 4th holiday. There were A LOT of South Asian/Indian/Paki/Middle Eastern customers and the salesman who waited on me was South Asian. There were other ethnicities, as well. But yeah, I've heard other words substituted for "green" in Green Acres for a long time too.
My wife and I went for a walk at the South Shore Mall the other day and we very pleasantly surprised.
The new Macy's is beautiful and the entire mall seems to be in the midst of a facelift.
We live about 2 miles from the south shore mall but we've been driving all the way to Westfield Sunrise because SSM was so crappy. We're really happy to see that they're fixing it up!
I went to the South Shore mall for the first time last Thanksgiving. I was surprised how crappy it was. I'm glad to hear it's doing better.
I moved to LI from Forest Hills last year. I remember when I moved to Forest Hills and went to the Queens Center Mall for the first time. I was shocked. It was nicely renovated and had lots of upscale stores, as well as the "urban, independent stores". The only thing unpleasant about that mall was that it was so crowded. Other than that, it was a pleasant experience -- clean and never felt unsafe. Good food court options, including a conveyor belt sushi place and Five Guys.
Economically, the neighborhoods surrounding the Queens Center Mall are probably not better than the areas surrounding the South Shore Mall. Sure, you had Forest Hills, and working class areas like Rego Park and Glendale, but you also had Elmhurst and Corona. Middle class families from Howard Beach may find it easier to just go east to Green Acres -- probably just as close and free parking. People from Bayside have their own strip mall (Bay Terrace Shopping Center) and may opt to drive to Long Island -- again, free parking and just as close. People in "cooler" parts of Queens like Astoria and LIC so close to Manhattan, why bother going to Queens Center Mall?
My point is that if there's a mall that's pleasant and feels nice, people may feel a vested interest in keeping it that way. I don't see that the Queens Center Mall is going downhill any time soon.
