I'd start a bonfire with them, but I'm sure the neighbors wouldn't be thrilled. Anyone know where I can donate or dispose of old textbooks?

How old? I am interested in old physics and math texts.

Have you tried posting them on freecycle? There are groups in Nassau and Suffolk.

I don't know if this exists in NY, but when I lived in Massachusetts, the state accepted old textbook donations for their prisons, to be used in continuing education programs. It was an easy way to get rid of textbooks that the book store wouldn't buy back when I was in college.

If they're extremely old - say, 40+ years - you could always contact vintage booksellers who might be interested for the kitsch value.

You can just toss them in the newspaper recycle bin.

Throw them at the curb, and for goo measure post an ad on Craigslist stating textbooks at curb if someone is looking to pick them up

Found a thrift store at 188 Hempstead Tpk in West Hempstead (516-489-1661) that takes old textbooks.

Now just need to find a place that will recycle old phonebooks.
