We are looking for buying a house and liked one house in New Hyde Park. There used to be a Doctor who used to live in it (2nd floor) and also ran a practice from this house (1st floor - separate entrance).
Questions:
1. Will it be possible for us to run a daycare from this house (1st floor - separate entrance)?
2. What is the process to validate if the house is zoned appropriately (Considering the doctor had a practice from this location, we are assuming that it should be OK)
3. What is the process for getting license to run a daycare in long island?
If I were you, I would go to the NYS website and look up the information there. If you're going to be running a day care, you have to be sure you are following the rules and the laws exactly. Best to get the information from the proper source than to rely in information that could be incorrect and opinions from others on an anonymous internet message board.
I am a bit concerned about the part if City/Neighborhood won't permit running the day care from a single family house. If there are going to be any issues here.

You will have no problem house wise. My former backyard neighbor ran a daycare from her home that was licensed and she too had a single family home. Just before we moved she closed down as she said the license fees and strict regulation ratios of caregiver to children made it impossible for her to continue. She had a wonderful neighborhood business but financially could not continue on. I should also note that she agreed with all the regulations wholeheartedly too.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a problem, but I would check zoning laws in the specific area. if you are in a village, that can change things too.
from a NYS licensing, once you hit a certian number of children, you need to be licensed. not sure hte specific number, my wife used to watch another child in our house, I looked, what we were doing didn't require a license, we only had 1 child. Once you are a daycare there are licensing, insurance, ratio, and inspection requirements, some worse than others, but defintely something to go into eyes open, its not trivial.
