If you purchase a house in Suffolk County (town of Huntington if it makes a difference) and the taxes are considerably lower than for comparable houses in the same neighborhood, will your taxes eventually be reassessed & raised based on the sale price? We have been told no, they won't be automatically reassessed...is that true? There are a few houses we've looked at that have taxes at close to half of what comparable houses have...it certainly makes those houses very attractive! Any experience or insight into this issue would be much appreciated- thank you!

No, they will not automatically be reassessed in the Town of Huntington.
If you make changes that require a CO, there would most likely be an increase (depending on what the changes are).

Thank you- if we make changes that require a CO (like put in a pool, add a deck, etc) would they likely just raise the taxes based on the addition of the pool/deck/etc or do they typically reassess the entire house?

Typically they just raise taxes based on additions and certain improvements.

Great- so if we end up choosing a house with low taxes, we can feel fairly confident that they will stay that way!! Thank you!

I would also check what savings the owner may be getting on their taxes that you might not qualify for, such as for veterans or firefighters for example.

And you'll get the usual yearly increases.

I'm happy I only pay about $7,000/yr in property taxes in Huntington, but I'm in a 1955 house with a small lot.
