Hi is it worth joining Angie's list to get reliable plumbers, electricians, and carpenters etc.? I know they have coupons and deals sometimes targeted to your neighborhood. Is there a catch to those deals? Do you pay what's advertised or does it come out more? Need to update my neglected home...thanks!

Agreed. Also, their claim to fame is that you're getting honest opinions and reviews..not true. Companies will fight to have negative reviews removed and win. No one wants to get sued for libel.

Try Home Advisors online for referrals. They check that the contractors are properly insured and licensed. The contractor pays for the referrals they receive. You do not. There are reviews that you can read about a particular contractor.

I was looking for reviews of a housing inspector we were considering, and there was a search result on Google saying that he had a profile and reviews on Angie's List. So I signed up, and his profile was nowhere to be found on AL - it was Google bait to get you to join. Not cool. I promptly cancelled and got my money refunded.

I joined but it wasn't very helpful. We got burned by a mover-they canceled on us two days before the move (their mistake-didn't put in on the "board") When I reviewed and wrote that on Angies List they responded with a total lie and nonsense of a story about how I had canceled last minute on them. Also, had a tree company come to give an estimate-had high ratings-gave an estimate almost double of 2 others not through Angies list. After that I canceled my membership.

The only thing Angie's List is good for is fattening Angie's pockets...

I think Angie's list is a fraud too. I recently got a couple of estimates from several highly rated contractors and they were all rip offs. Screw that. The site is a money making scam. You will have to pay more if you want info on contractors out of your area. Don't waste your money on this crap.
