Business seems to be booming for cabs these days. Between the LIRR and NICE Bus leaving people stranded, things arent great for ppl who rely on mass transit. Cabbies are crooks though and I'll walk for 15 miles before taking one. LIRR fails time and time again on their pledge, which is to provide alternate service when trains are down. In your case they didn't. And buses need to run later at night & more often, NICE came in & screwed up service on quite a few routes, last buses in many south shore towns now are like at 5-6pm, a joke, they should run at least till 9pm. Other routes have irregular service. No wonder they're losing riders when people can't depend on the service. But to be fair, buses are cheap, and NICE is making do with a much lower budget than MTA did. For what the LIRR costs riders deserve better. Things will always go wrong, the problem is how LIRR deals with those problems, stranding riders and not providing alternatives is my biggest gripe.
And things could get much worse next July, when LIRR workers may go on strike, leading to mass chaos on the roads. I think it's up to us to push for alternatives, there needs to be more bus service, especially later at night, so commuters have an alternative to the LIRR. Not sure which station you were going to, but say if you were going to Bethpage you could've taken a Babylon train and got an 81 bus at Massapequa, if it only ran later at night. Most buses should run 5am to 11pm 7 days a week, so people dont get stranded at night.
