wow, what a trip to read this.

Ok. here is my Oceanside Look back.

Living near Boardman and the Oceanside Park. When the whole area was still open undeveloped land...6 foot tall cat tail grass all the way to the bay. We could see the
Pink Hotel in Long Beach from Our house. We also enjoyed the low flying 747 Jumbo Jets...and yes the smell of the dumps. But the dumps were part of our playground as kids. We dared to sneak in, and walk around the smelly muck. Other children claimed to 'hunt' rats there, with there bb guns. And yes...they PROMISED us in school one day...that we would one day SKI!!! No lie. But only a few would remember the SNAKE PLACE ...a small little wooded lot near the FIRE HOUSE OLYMPIC PARK. We would find and capture large garder snakes. Also in that neigboorhood were the FACTORIES... there was a popcorn factory which left the back doors open and we would steal popcorn. There was also a porn newspaper company located there. On windy days kids woud find pages of the porn paper blown around, getting stuck in the bushes and stuff.

Years earlier there was even a CIRCUS in that area. Amazing. On the other side of the Neighboorhood, further south where all the new homes would be built... was BEDELLS CREEK. There were salty boat yards and fishmarkets here. There was also a famous little league field...WRIGHTS FIELD. All Star 10 year olds would jack home runs into the water.
South of Wrights Field was TREASURE ISLAND? one of the famous Oceanside Summer Day Camps. I never went ot day camp as a kid, my dad didn't want to waste his money. I went to the 'Free' summer recreation program..where we focused on knock hockey and wiffle ball... But in the Winter when the Summer Camp was closed an under lock down we would sneak in and run around... at the far end of the camp was the nature area...heading out ot middle bay...

I remember Lawson Blvd. There was a great discount make-up store there and I stopped at it everytime I went to my relatives in Long Beach. I told the owner I was moving to Houston and she said if you ever need a doctor here is my brother's phone number. I did use him and didn't care for his beside manner so I used his assistant on the next visit. We are still friends today(the assistant). This was almost 30 years ago.
Does anyone remember Capri Beach Club and El Patio? We belonged to Capri and had our Senior Prom at El Patio. Johnny Mistro and the Brookly Bridge played at the prom
My relatives lived on June Walk in LB across the street from the fishing dock.My grandmother lived off Long Beach Road and I do remember the pink hotel. We took the LIRR from Elmont and loved the double decker trains.
Thanks for bringing back such great memories. (Tears are coming down ).

If you want some Oceanside nostalgia, try Howie Levy's website for the OHS class of 1960. I was in the class of 1963 and love the site.

Great Nathan's info. I worked there thru HS and Hofstra.

some great memories here! I had one of my 4th grade birthday party at the pizza machine. Who here knows the real stoy behind it? were the "boys" behind it like they say? what went down?

Also I grew up one of those NEW houses in Treasure Island? I remember when the model homes where like the only thing there...and we had dunes in the back of my house that the bedells and friends would ride around on with their dirt bikes. my mom used to send me to their fish market...and to get to my friends house on the other side of oceanside road, I'd either walk around the park or through boardman.

I grew up playing stickball in the wrights field parking lot...eating great hot dogs from (I think his name was moe) an old ice cream truck. We also had amazing stickball games against the handball wall in Boardman....they took it down, but it was right where the "portables" is. Do you remember walking to the flea market when there was no Sands shopping center, but only tall weeds? Of course I do?

What I'd love to know is if anyone here still has the original brochure for TREASURE ISLAND? I lived on one of those houses and am dying to see it again!

Great post!

Great post!

We have to be around the same age!!!! I remember attending class in those "portables", Mr. Fazio's music class was always fun. He kicked me out of class about 3 times! I had one of the Bedells in my grade, and played many games of "Suicide" against the handball wall and the side of Boardman. I knew plenty of people in those houses over by Treasure Island, for some reason I think we called them "Madison Homes", maybe I'm crazy or the fact that it was 25 years ago but my memory is fuzzy.

I remember when they built the Sands shopping center, there was a K&B Toy Store and a "Record World" or something like that.

dude, we must have known one another or something....cuz I was there playing suicide EVERYDAY....I also played football or punchball during lunch....I was in mrs. garfield's class, then I had mrs. harwood, then mrs. lehrer, and mrs. cohen, and mr. whaler...you remember these names? I wasn't good at writing in the lines so I went downstairs ti mrs. brodskey. I'm talking 9e stuff too...so I don't know if you just came for jr. high, or if you were at boardman the whole way through like me.

they did call them the madison homes and the same builders made some cul de sacs off of east rockaway road.

Anyway, you remember when all the burnouts would hang out in the back of nathans, and it was actually a little scary to be there! so fun! and remember we had jay fieldler! he was just one or two years older than me and and he would play punchball with us! This is awesome!

Anyone remember ordering delivery breakfast/lunch from the whistle stop on Lawson? YUM!
