After reading all of the pathetic bickering going on I am even more driven to finally get out of this dump and buy land in remote Alaska. I've been really wanting to live a subsistence lifestyle and I am ready. I'm ready to be a hermit and bring my family to a remote cabin in Alaska.

Just me, my family and a moose.

Can't wait!!

Wait, living on Long Island with the taxes and high COL isn't a subsistence lifestyle?

Most of Alaska is just as expensive, if not more than, Long Island. That said, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Last week I binged on watching house hunters in Alaska, one after the other, and I was shocked how expensive the housing was, crappy houses for $300k, something decent for $450k. In some locations they get 12 feet of snow and in the summer it's daylight for twenty hours. I could never live there, but I too would like to move off the island, but not because some people here bicker, lol. Message forums everywhere have people acting rude, it's an Internet thing. My reasons to get off this island are because there are no mountains, too congested, high taxes, and I absolutely hate how we have to go thru hell to go anywhere (anywhere off the island).

Come to Greenville, SC! It's close to the mountains, low taxes, affordable housing, and many transplants, so you won't feel isolated! We moved to Raleigh from LI , and now are moving further south. Don't miss LI at all!

have friends who have lived in Anchorage for 25 years . none of their three kids stayed up there, and they are anxious to retire back in the "lower 48". Besides all the things mentioned above, you have to deal with the lack of sunlight in winter, and lack of darkness in summer. Apparently the long dark winters cause depression in lots of folks. Summers are hard also because it's hard to sleep with only three hours of darkness.
