The fine is beyond outrageous. I paid more than double the fine than the actual cell phone ticket. They know they go you because you want a clean license. It would be the same as stealing a $180 iPod. They catch you and say, pay the $180 and you get the iPhone and a misdemeanor. OR, since you have never been in trouble with the law before, we will erase the police record if you buy the same iPod for $450.
It is no different than that, yet, you would never here of that. Of course, the thing that would happen is you pay the lawyer $450 and the charges would be dropped. It almost sounds normal because we are so used to it but if you step back and look, it is pure corruption.

It costs money to operate the courts. That has to be made up somewhere. The taxpayers shouldn't be footing the entire bill for those who try to plea down. The $270 is overhead.
In the old days, Suffolk County traffic courts were not real courts and the judges are not 'official judges.' You could not plea down a case. It was either not guilty or guilty. Guess what the verdict was most of the time? And the judges were friends of the county supervisor, not guardians of the law nor unbiased arbiters of traffic law. They could rule any way the wanted to.
Fast forward to April of this year and the formation of Suffolk County's Traffic and Parking Violations Agency, the most corrupt and duplicitous traffic court in the land. The SCTPVA loves to plea bargain but it's fines--in return--are greater than 3x any other court in the land.
It's tragic that this is what we as citizens are faced with as a way of funding the county, with the most corrupt and incompetent leader Bellone. Between the SCTPVA and those lovely traffic light cameras (accompanied by decreased yellow light times), our roads are no safer, just poorer.
Tell your wife to stop breaking your balls. Exception: Unless you were indeed in the timeframe where she was going to HAVE TO call her job and say she was going to be late, then it's your fault. Otherwise, if she was not at the timeframe where she had to know where you were because at that exact moment she had to call the job and say she was going to be late because of you, she is a freakin' pushy shrew and she was the one who cost you the $450 (especially since I also bet if you did not pick up the phone at her command you would have never heard the end of it (WHINE! Why didn't you pick up!) and I suppose that is why you picked it up while driving).
PS: This message is written by a woman and I never harass my husband stalking his whereabouts and timing him on his way home by calling to demand "status" on the cellphone.

This wasn't an emergency pertaining to a small child.
Unless he was actually late (and he hasn't responded so we don't know), this was nagging and an example of a wife being a ballbuster and using a cellphone as an electronic leash.
