Mine, Holbrook ,Town of Islip went up $255/year total. $150 was school
Not too bad
similar numbers for me ($230/$150 school). Huntington town.
You know things are terrible when you consider a $250 yearly increase "not bad".
My friend in the suburbs of Harrisburg pays about $1000/yr. The school bus and garbage truck come to his house. The street lights work. the roads get plowed there when it snows. They have a library with books. etc. etc.

Lot less people out that way, things are spread out more..... Tons of farmland....... Not defending the system we have here. but.

Yeah, and I'll bet the teachers and cops in Harrisburg aren't making $100g++ per annum, with liberal health and pension benefits.
Teachers and cops on LI make more than almost anywhere in the US. So it's no leap of logic that LI has among the highest property taxes in the land. Our politicians are here to serve the unions, not the people. You just have to review the last three contracts Belloney has signed to confirm that.
Surprised no one has said it: "But we have such nice beaches!" "And the schools are top notch! Junior (our special little snow flake) is in such good hands because the teacher's union sent me a flyer telling me so!"

Actually, given the amount of snow they have there, they are probably more turf fields...
The state (PA) there is also providing more than 50% of the local school district budgets. We don't get that equality in NY, unless you are entitled (i.e. Brentwood, Roosevelt, etc....)

People work hard and sacrifice to be here and do the best for their kids... everyone knows it is no bargain being here. Yet you feel it's cool to mock them. Congrats.
Ours went up $417 for the year. Whatever happened to the 2% cap?! Sick of paying for other people's raises and benefits while ours have remained stagnant for years with yearly increases in healthcare insurance, cutbacks on 401 matching, etc. Ugh! We really want to move to NOVA/Maryland, but only if we can find jobs near each other since traffic down there is horrific! My friends have 4000 sqft house in DC area and pays the same amount of taxes as our 1900 sqft house! And the schools there are rated much higher nationally than Long Island's. None of the Suffolk schools are ever ranked that high nationally to even make the cut.
