My wife is considering a position in Fort Jefferson.
I currently work in the midtown. We have two kids - 3.5 and 1. Schools are important.
Currently we live in Riverdale, Bronx and really love it but I guess it is a time for a change.
We would like a place with a community feel -- not a classical suburbia/subdevision kind.
Shops, eating out in local restaurants, and walkability are important to us.
Main street/downtown that looks nice would be an added benefit.
I really enjoy biking and currently commute to work everyday from Riverdale. It would be hard to do it from anywhere on long island -- but if biking can be a part of my commute/lifestyle I would be happy
We also like a hilly terrain.
We are a Russian-Secular-Jewish. so xenophobic community is not an option
Budget - ( 600 - 800K ) to buy or rent not sure which yet.

West Neck area of Huntington. I never realized this growing up in Huntington but that area is predominately Jewish. I didn't realize this till after we were house hunting there. You'll get lots of bad feedback about the schools though.
Stony Brook with that budget. Three Village Schools. Very close to Port Jeff. And you can train into the city.
And be on the slow Port Jeff line. Might as well try Setauket, still 3V schools but you could be south of 347 so you can get to Ronkonkoma for the train
Where in NYC do you work? Midtown ... east or west side? Walking distance to Penn Station?
CitiBiking/foldable bike Distance
59th street and 5th
