When my husband and I were house hunting, one of our must-have criteria was a garage. But we saw a lot of homes where there was a garage, but some of it or all of it had been taken over as living space/storage. Our Realtor told us that no one on LI uses their garage for their cars anymore. But we persisted, stating it was important to us to be able to store our car away from the elements (even though our current car is not "nice," we hope to have a nicer car in the future), but also the car is much warmer in the winter when it's parked in the garage instead of the driveway.
My only concern is that since we share a car, it often looks like no one is home, aside from some lights. But since the car is always parked in the garage, it just looks like we left some lights on and left the house.
So, do you have a garage? If so, do you park any cars in it?
We park in it. Love having that feature of never getting wet, ease for bringing in groceries, etc. But you are right, most of my neighbors do not park in theirs.
We have a two car garage but only one car parks in it b/c the garage has so much clutter.
I notice homes all around LI with enclosed garages made into a room (especially in hi-ranches) and I can't stand the look of them for some reason..but to each their own

Our garage has been converted into a mancave/media room, definitely a much better use of the space. I thought we absolutely needed a garage but it turns out we don't miss it at all.
I park my car in the garage. first house didn't have one, and I was very big on getting one in the second house.
for the stuff...... I have an attic and basement, and planning on a shed. we definitely have to clean out, but IMHO find the right storage space for each item and park your many thousands of $$ car in the garage and get rid of your worthless crap.
unfortunately we weren't able to find the right house with a 2 car garage
We park both cars in the garage in bad weather or when we have guests; otherwise we park 'em in the driveway. We only store tools and cardboard boxes in it, so it's easy access in an emergency. Neither of us had this option growing up, and I have to say the ease of having a place to park cars and not worrying about cleaning off snow or damage from impending hurricanes is a big relief.
A two car garage was a must have for our present home after only only having a one car in our first homre. Both cars are in the garage every day. I have a basement, attic and shed for everything else.
My parent's Nassau County house had 1/2 garage because the other part was used to create a larger family room. Dad used it to store bicycles and a few odds and ends. One car parked in the driveway and the other in the street.
I married a car guy. A garage was a must have when we looked for houses. We wound up with a 1 car attached garage which we had outgrown before the end of our first year. Mr. OBH built an 1800 sq ft carriage house. The original garage was converted to living space.
