I have never gotten a ticket from a red light camera.
I have lived in several States, among them NY, NJ, NC, and SC. In my view, NY's policies, and the implementation thereof, are major sources of revenue for the State. I have never felt this way about anyplace else.
Here in NC, I am not backhanded by a million and one ancillary fees; a ticket costs what it costs; I do not have to add "driver responsibility fees" or "public safety fees" to the cost of the ticket.
My license plate cost me around $25, not the $220 I had to pay in NY.
I pay a small environmental fee of $7 per month added to my water bill, and the folks here actually provide services to benefit the environment (e.g. the regular clearing of storm drains; maintaining the good health of creeks, streams, and lakes, and the aquatic life that they sustain).
In SC, we have recycle centers that regularly accept motor oil, oil filters, batteries, tv's, antifreeze, used paint, the recycling of large metal or paper products; I do not have to pay extra fees, wait for a scheduled "recycle your waste day."
I put a bed out the the curb, and they take it; no hassles; no appointments necessary. Same with other items. I don't have to cut twigs down to "regulation size;" etc.
Back to the red light cameras: my issue is not with the enforcement of laws, but in my view, the system in NY is positioned in such a way as to generate revenue. Here, in NC, the sense that people get is that laws are here to maintain order in society (not to subsidize the operations of local government which can't afford to increase taxes).
That's what I take issue with (and I no longer have to put up with it
- 7 glorious years away from NY!)
