Interstate 495 meets the criteria for freeway (4 lanes each direction with a concrete median separating directions of travel that has rural stretches that last for 10 miles or more)
Using the term "freeway" here removes anything you say from being considered seriously.
Here is a video I made of me going exactly 55 mph on the LIE to show how ridiculous it is.
A few things you were doing wrong.
1. You were not in the left lane.
2. You did not cross over the HOV line illegally.
3. You did not selfishly cross 3 lanes of traffic to get off your exit.

Nobody does 55 mph on the LIE unless traffic forces them. The unofficial speed limit is 65 to 75 on there.
Try going past exit 68 east bound. They get really nutty out there, up to 80+.

The whole LIE is a mini Autobahn. Anything under 70 in any lane is unacceptable. Dead average is 78. It only slows down way west because of the Queens/city traffic. They'd all be doing close to 80 to the tunnel if they could.

There's always a slowdown in the right and middle lanes in the 40's and 50's. Hitting the high 30's westbound always slows down to 50.
Newest thing nowadays is someone does 55 in the left lane.
The thing that drives me most crazy is the inconsistent driver. The clown that fluctuates +/- 5 or 10 mph. If you're gonna do 65, DO 65!
Not a little 60, then 62, then 58, then 66.
Maintain your damn speed. Drives me insane.

I didn't watch the whole video but at no time in the places I watched did you show your speedometer. Did you show it someplace in the clip? For credibility you need to do that otherwise we don't know if you were really going 55 or 40 or some other speed.
Keep it at 55mph because as it is now they do 80 mph, if you raise it they will do 100.
