Restoring 65 MPH speed limits on Eastern LI freeways (Islip, Bay Shore: airport, safe)

Parts of I-15 in Utah had an 80 mph/day 65 mph/night speed limit for cars when I visited a couple of years ago. Commercial trucks had a slightly lower speed limit. The lack of population density in those areas made the increased speed limit a no-brainer. Speed limit dropped in areas where there were towns. The 80 mph was a test at the time -- it had been increased from 75 mph.
I could see having a 65 mph speed limit on the LIE east of Motor Parkway.

East of northern state should be 65. Northern state to cross Island should be 55. From midtown tunnel to cross island it should be 50.
NJ and southern NY increased speeds to 65 mph some time in 2003 Just before I departed Long Island. I expected the speed limits on LIE to change then. Its long overdue. Should have been changed when 287, 280, 684, and 195 had their speed limits increased to 65 mph.

When the speed limit is 55 people do 70, if they raise it to 65, people will do 80.
I agree with what your saying. Its a problem, you give people an inch and they will take a mile. Or 75 mph as the case maybe!
However, you have to admit that it is strange that limited access roads like the LIE and Sunrise Highway in Suffolk, have almost the same speed limit as parts of full access roads with traffic lights like Rte 110, Sunrise in Nassau and Jericho Turnpike.
And apparently the traveling public agrees. When everyone, when even Grandma is going over 55 on the LIE, that could be a sign that maybe, just maybe the speed limit could be a bit higher.
So if it was up to me, I would make it either 60 or 65 mph on the LIE from eastern Nassau all the way to Riverhead.

55 mph is about revenue. Don't expect to see it change anytime in the near future.

As long as Nassau County needs money, that speed limit will stay at 55. Crossing into Nassau from Suffolk, I almost always see a Nassau cop waiting to catch someone speeding.
I'm all for 65 from Motor Parkway east. The stupidity I've seen at the LIE/SAG and the LIE entrance for Wicks Rd has convinced me that there are drivers out there who don't need a new 'suggested' speed limit over 55 on that stretch.
