Moderator cut: language removed Yes, some people can't afford LI and want to leave. Ok, so? Leave if you want to leave. Yes, it's expensive and crowded. To me that means lots of people clearly WANT to be here, otherwise it would be cheap and desolate...like all the places people REALLY don't want to be. So just stop.

Exactly! I'll repost again:
I never saw so much traffic!
I never saw so many condo & apartment complexes being built. With rents of $2500+
You are not cutting lawns paying those rents or buying condos. So, I love when people say "they are all leaving".

Yes, we do live in one of the most expensive parts of the world.

AJ, I spent 59 years on LI and Loved it and still do, there is no place quite like LI no matter where I have travelled. That said, I could have stayed there, I could have afforded it. We chose to relocate mainly because we realized that what we loved about LI (the water) is available to us here in DE. at a greatly reduced price and we can travel and do exactly what we did on LI but the $$ we spent on taxes on LI we now spend on ourselves and our family. My home here is 1/3 larger and our taxes went up a whopping $13.46 per year to $1376.44 and I get a $500 reduction once I am 65 and I am just under 2 miles to the beach. But, that is not for everyone but it was and is for us.

I guess my point is, I would no more attempt to justify why someone would want to stay on LI than I would attempt to justify why someone wants to leave LI. It is a deep rooted and complex decision for many who consider it and remain for their own reasons.

Maybe I am different, I admit that I still love LI and I still have family there. Both mine and DH entire families remain there, and we still love it but we are very happy here and never looked back on our decision to leave. I have often said, we miss people, pizza and bagels.

Fair points but two others to ponder:

1) Some people leave even though they can afford LI, they just see a better quality of life with less stress elsewhere. This is particularly true of middle to upper middle class workers who aren't tied to jobs in Manhattan and who would earn a similar wage elsewhere.

2) A lot of people move to LI because it provides a better quality of life than living in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. Think of young families and immigrants who want some grass and better schools.

Without Manhattan nearby Long Island would be more like Rhode Island than what it is. Short term it'll be fine but with a continued loss of manufacturing and other jobs it will be more and more dependent on service jobs and commuters which isn't healthy.

The NYC suburbs as a whole are a ripoff. Let's compare what $400k gets you suburbs of various metro areas. Yeah, the pay in MANHATTAN is higher than average but the pay on Long Island SUCKS; if you want a decent income, you would have to fight for it and do a long, painful and expensive Parking+LIRR+subway commute TWICE a day; and then even after that, you get raped by property taxes. The topic is like beating a dead horse but let's just use a bit of common-sense..

What $400k gets you in the Charlotte NC suburbs:

What $400k gets you in the Chicago suburbs:

What $400k gets you in the Phoenix suburbs:
