Trying to narrow down our home search. We have two children under 6 so a strong School district is a must. Please share information on these school districts. We are obviously drawn to the north shore and looking for wonderful school district and a community driven/friendly town. Also want a town that is pleasing to the eye, that might sound odd but coming from the middle of the Island we are interested to know about the landscape, things to do and local beaches to each district. Our current town in the Sachem community has nothing that is pretty about it, neighborhoods and strip malls and not much else. Thanks.
Mount Sinai resident here. MS has the strongest school district and the highest taxes. Miller Place is ok, but I know several families who moved from MP to MS for the schools. The reputation of RP and SWR are that they are not as strong as MS and MP. It all depends really on what you are looking for and what your expectations are for your kids. Mt. Sinai and Miller Place send a very high percent of their students to 4 year colleges. Good luck!

In all fairness, the landscape of most of the areas you mentioned is nothing to scream about. North of 25A you have some hills at least, but you really have no "town" outside of Port Jefferson..Mount Sinai 25A to Rocky Point is 100% strip malls and looks like Portion Road.
Mount Sinai, Miller Place, Shoreham/WR, Rocky Point in that order in terms of district reputation.
dman72 is correct, none of these towns are "pretty" except in certain neighborhoods and up by the water. However, they are all very community oriented and have "small town" feels to them. We picked Mt. Sinai and we have been happy with that choice.
If you are picking based on looks and your budget is over $1 million, i'd pick Mount Sinai and i'd live close to the beach. The school district is highly rated. Miller place is over-rated. Rocky Point right around 25A is average looking but the schools are very good and under-rated. If you go north of 25A in cerain parts of rocky Point, there are better looking areas (west of broadway(closer to TFCU) Shoreham-Wading River have very nice areas and homes but there programs are under funded which is especially noticeable in the elementary schools. Miller Avenue doesn't even have a lunch room. I would probably go MS,RP,SWR,MP. Miller Place is way too high on themselves and even though there are decent businesses, the snobs are a plenty.
