Don't waste your time on LI and the LIRR. Commute to Grand Central on MNRR. While MNRR has had a few black eyes of late, its still far ahead of commuting on the LIRR and godawful Penn.

you're assuming this person is going to be at this particular location for a very long time.
But yeah, if you know you're going to be in midtown east for the foreseeable future, I'd also prefer commuting into Grand Central. East Side Access is now 10+ years away.
BTW, going from Grand Central Station to 50th & 6th is a pain. I have to visit between 51st & 6th and 200 Park (Grand Central Station) for meetings, and I end up prefering to take a long walk or cab. Most times its faster then going from Grand Central Station, take the 7 or S train across and then transfer to B/D/F/V train (super long walk to transfer) or 1/N/Q/R train.
I guess it shouldn't matter, but does add a bit more to commute time.

?
If you come in on MNRR, get on the back of the train, not the front. Exit from the East 47th & Madison Grand central exit. Then its 1 and 1/2 avenues over and 3 short blocks uptown to 50th and 6th.
Unless you have difficulty walking for whatever reason, I don't know how it would be an issue.

This is like a 10 minute walk at most. The vast majority of people commuting into Grand Central likely either have longer subsequent subway rides or simply walk further distances than this.

Are the schools in that area also as good as the schools that jshlee listed ?
I know a few schools on the NJ side from where you could commute to manhattan that are comparable to the listed schools.
