When I had heard in Newsday that some people were getting $900 bills, I thought to myself that could never be me...until I received my final PSEG bill today. Nope, it's even worse. Moved and received final bill...$1004. I am about to have a heart attack. The price per KWH has not changed much, but apparently our usage has more than doubled? Absolutely impossible. Did they hire their own meter readers too?!!
Old house was about 1200 sq ft. Nothing changed with our usage. They billed us for 4900+ kwh. Our avg for same period last year was about 2300 kwh. $1004 is about our usage for the previous 6 mos. So how could it possibly be the same for 67 days.
Were you on balanced billing?
They always tally it up on your final of the year (which is what they'd do with your final with your moving out) and it comes out higher than what it was on balanced. What you can do is find out the reading it is now by contacting the new owners or go there yourself and read it. The numbers are both on the bill and on your meter outside so you can tell if they're being fraudulent (if the reading now is lower than what it shows on your final). It's not like PSEG can make the meter move faster than it did before when LIPA owned it. The 2600+ kwh (4900-2300 usual) could be the overage for the year leading up to your move. If that's the case, you should find out your # for the 1st reading of the year too.
If you weren't on balanced billing, there are hardly any complications other than the 2-month estimates instead of actual.
I wouldn't cry foul until you have all actual numbers in front of you. What also doesn't make sense is why isn't everyone affected by crazy increases if they're scamming?

Everyone I've spoken to on LI says the last bill has dramatically increased…. and these convoluted, non-sensical bills make it impossible to tell just where the increase came from.

Figure out why KWH usage has increased first. They can't make that number up - and I don't mean the bi-monthly estimate - nor can they accelerate the meter if they are there on your properties.
If KWH remains about the same and the bill is still higher, then it's not really a mystery - the prices simply have gone up. I'm not seeing a significant increase that cannot be explained. This shows $/kwh has increased slightly since the takeover, but that doesn't indicate something shady is going on.
As a matter of fact, some of my LIPA bills from 2011 showed we were paying $0.22/kwh then too.
Lastly, since it's winter, I've discovered that my old boiler running for 5 hours a day for 30 days uses 100 additional kwh. If your boiler runs multiple circulators (110 watts each)/fans/etc. for even longer, it adds to your usage. I've since upgraded to new tech that drops that to just 6 additional kwh.

I think people are smart enough to know how to calculate their kWH costs and that's what most are saying are higher, not the number of kWhs consumed.
I average around 350-450 kwh's and my bill has gone up around $20 with the increased power supply charges. I don't know what is going on with everyone else's bills.
My usage has not changed either, bill went up about $15.
For all you folks reporting a big increase in usage I def. would not let it go.
