Hello city-zens. I've fallen in love with a major fixer-upper in North Massapequa, but I'm a little (a lot) concerned about the taxes.
They're nearly $13,000 a year! That's without STAR, and based on an assessment that is no longer accurate (the house is easily worth 20% less today than when it was last assessed.)
I was looking for something under $10k a year, but this house seems so perfect. Does it make sense to buy a home with such high taxes? I know taxes never go down, but is it possible to get them reduced for now by asking for a new assessment?
Thanks much in advance for your insight!

That's the going rate in a lot of towns with very good school districts.

This home I believe is districted for Farmingdale schools. Are they that good? Greatschools gives them generally positive ratings, but they're not all 9s & 10s. (Whatever those numbers are worth.)

Taxes on the island are insane. I paid $300k for my house and my taxes are over $15k with STAR.

Why buy a house in Massapequa that feeds into Farmingdale schools?

Love the house & the neighborhood. Would happily send my kids to Farmingdale schools at least through primary.

Massapequa > Farmingdale schools. I would find another one in Mass. schools, or Plainedge.

The taxes wouldn't be that high if a house was zoned for amityville sd.
OP, for those taxes I would look for another house. Farmingdale isn't terrible but Massapequa and Plainedge SD is better. I have many friends that live there and they have nothing but wonderful things to say about the schools.
