If it is a real freeze the budget line item presented in May 2012 for teachers salaries should be less than 2011. The COL is just half the story.
Very true. There is a difference between a 'real freeze" and a salary freeze. I have seen both. At the same time, not all teachers in a district receive annual step increases so what you may not think is a real freeze, may in fact be one for some of the teachers. You have to look at a contract and see where the step increases are positioned along a salary scale to determine that.
Another argument for consolidating districts I guess.

Typically people living in dumpy neighborhoods wants school district consolidation. I wouldn't want my district to consolidate with any others.

Completely unsubstantiated statement. Anyone with a half a brain knows there is almost zero difference in demographic between most of these districts yet each has to have their own set of curriculums?! It's completely ludicrous. Oh the horror if Levittown and Island Trees used the same math book and combined their toilet paper purchases. The world would stop on it's axis!

Try moving to another state. People act like we're using slates and chalk. I've seen my kids' NY friends' math books - same ones we are using. Even moreso now with the Core Curriculum being adopted.

Slash property taxes by 33%, which is already a huge task, and you still won't make LI a desirable place for industry.

The Island needs to come up with something else.
