Ok so this winter completely sucks! I have gone through a whole tank this month which is scary to do the numbers. Anyways I have two 275 standard looking vertical oil tanks outside. 1 went dry a few months ago so I was running off the other one until it ran out yesterday, possibly? System shut down, wont kick back on, but gauge says its at 1/3 apprx. Thinking it was out and the gauge is just busted, I had the other tank filled today with 205 gallons (because I couldnt bare to pay COD for a full 275 @ $3.999) When I peeked into the newly filled tank, it looked practically if not damn near full, but only had 205g put in and charged for.
Ok so questions are:
Can a gauge be that far off? Meaning the second tank says 1/3, but its really empty? Sounds empty when knocking on it. Cant get the angle to peek down in there and I havent tried wooden stick measurement yet.
How many gallons does an "empty" tank really take? I heard once that the bottom of the tank isnt really fuel, but the tank is still labled a 275g?
Did anyone else burn a whole tank of fuel Jan 1st - Jan 31st?
ok, i keep seeing threads like this and it really does make me wonder am i doing something wrong? i go through a bout 200 gal every 4-6 weeks. What gives?

ok. um when im home i keep the house at 70 (4pm-9pm) then its at 68 from 10pm-4am, after which it goes back to 70 till 7am. between 7am and 4pm it sits at 65. two zone heating second floor is at 67 24/7. home is 2500 sq. ft. also on weekends its 70 all day.
^^
mines is not far from yours. I have 3 zones. 7am-4pm is 58 for all 3 zones. At night, downstairs is 58. Upstair is 67. About similar sq footage as yours.
Then comes the other factors like type of house...I heard split levels are not as efficient because of its layout. Also how well sealed up is your home is a factor. natural sunlight into your home also helps save energy bill.
My furnace is about 25 yrs old...about 3-4 yrs ago, I changed just the motor burner for better efficiency. I believe that helps as well.
only been in the home for a year and a half so not sure about the furnace. most of my sq footage is on my main floor second floor is 600sq.ft at best (one bedroom and loft area). my guess is the house has settles and the windows are no longer stopping drafts as well (good old andersons for ya). idk maybe i just need to seal the sob up better. so having your heating go from 58 to say 70 everyday wouldnt break the pipes or screw anything up?
