That's what I'm saying.... I mean, seriously, your home is your "estate" but that doesn't mean when you're trying to off your kids' old toys and some old clothes and general crap, you should call it an "Estate Sale".
I definitely think that the words, in terms of yard sales and the like, are used interchangeably which is unfortunate. But I also think there is some confusion as to the meaning of the word "estate" when it comes to it's use in this context. It should always be referring to the possessions of a deceased person rather than a large or valuable property or anything like that.
It would seem that people hear the word "estate" and think of a mansion or something and perhaps people having a run-of-the-mill garage sale try to capitalize on that.
Lots of estate sales are family members selling their deceased relative's things. Usually furniture, collectibles, yard tools, etc. Sometimes, an estate sale is maybe a family or retirees looking to move elsewhere and don't want to take all the furniture and etc with them. But again, they are very valuable things.
I've been to a couple of estate sales that truly were big mansions of people worth over millions of dollars. I've been to sales in Miller Place, Bellport, places that have huge houses and have come across multiple gems, some things I wasn't looking for, but things that are definitely worth money.
I only stick to reputable companies that hold estate sales when going to them. These companies evaluate whether the family has enough things to warrant an estate sale. If they don't, they don't do it. If the family has some valuable pieces, the estate sale companies will sometimes help them sell it as an individual item. I don't bother with craigslist for estate sales though.
When people sell their stuff and have a garage sale, why is all the stuff in their driveway?
Why don't they call it a driveway sale?
LOL maybe because they stored it in the garage? Some people call it "tag sale"...
