It may be just squeaking above your price range, but why not Farmingdale off of Conklin or 110? The S1 goes right up 110. I live in Farmingdale village and I love it here. There are South Asians here from a variety of countries, not a huge percentage but definitely present.

Another option (also on 110) is South Huntington (school district number 13) You may be able to find an apartment east of 110 in southern Huntington Station in your price range, just be slightly more careful of location in Huntington Station. Generally if you have a family with children, you will need a two bedroom.

One piece of advice is that the bus may be inconvenient depending on when you have to be at work.

One bedroom apartment in Hauppauge which is about 30 minutes (Exit 57 of LIE) away from Melville. It goes for $1550. Plus you need to pay for your phone, cable, electric, and Internet providers. total monthly bill can be around $1700 to $1800.
Hauppauge Area Apartments for Rent | Devonshire Hills

If you are going to live in Hauppauge, you need a car. Many guys who lives here work at Canon. You can also do carpool.

If you want rent to be $1000, you need to go to Queens. Which is about one hour away from Melville.

I don't think it will be easy finding an apartment in that price range.

As for commuting, check with Canon to see if they have shuttles for their employees. There is a shuttle that stops at my building for employees that takes them to and from the LIRR station.

Indian family? Try the Shinnecock reservation out in Southampton. Great deals on cigarettes from what I hear.

Going by OP's name, I'm sure he's Asian Indian & not native American Indian.

How about answering our questions so we can better help?

Is it just you or your family is the big one?

$1000-1500 for a family to rent on Long Island is nigh impossible. If safety is a concern anyway.

As a family it is me and my wife but expecting a kid soon so safety is a concern. We can extend our budget if required.

Your best bey may be to buy a cheap, used car and stay a bit west of Melville, such as in Hicksville, where there are a lot of Indian restaurants. You may be able to find someone's basement apartment for about that price.
