Wow, I did not expect to open up such a big can of worms in this thread lol.......
All I really wanted to try and get some advice on is if you "think" or you "would" take a job in NYC for about 10K more.
Taking into account commuting expenses, travel time, possible decreased quality of life because of said travel time, etc.
Since I am single and I rent, moving IS a possible option, however if I were to move to say, Queens, then I would have to pay NYC taxes in my paycheck, which from my understanding is about 3% of your gross.
Attire is not an issue. I am in the medical field and I would either be wearing very business casual, or on certain days, just scrubs and sneakers.
Hours would be 10-6 or 11-7, Mon-Fri, with occasional Saturdays (Saturdays would be OT pay though). So I wouldn't be going in so early, but I would be getting home not until 9 or 10 pm most days, since I would be taking the train to Huntington station.
Still, after taxes and commuting expenses, I am not sure if 10K is worth it. Maybe if I lived closer to the city, near a subway line, it would be more worth it, this way I wouldn't have to pay for the exorbitant LIRR prices.
Keep in mind that with those hours finding parking at the train station might be difficult
yep, if its the LIRR you want one of the express trains in that 6-730am(into) and 430-6(outof)

those are crappy working hrs of you need LIRR. you miss a train then you have to wait an hr.
LI to NYC via LIRR, the working hrs need to be right around 9-5. you can make penn from rock or times is about 30min, enough time to get a LIRR right around that 530 area.
the construction crews are much earlier, seating is plentiful, but the trains are slooowwwwww.
so for that bump in salary, not sure i would want the extra headache of riding a crappy LIRR schedule from where OP is. oh yeah, forgot to mention, outside that plentiful trains window, your train gets canceled or is very late, there is likely no other station you can run to to grab a train. from 6-730am, i could go to a few other stations if my train went fubar for any reason.
By MITs' definition, my job actually doesn't exist (6 figures, NYC, same hours as on LI with better benefits and the same dress code, making significantly more than I would on LI, I was short and not exactly thin when hired, and I manage to spend time with my husband doing things other than eating, sleeping, or commuting every day).
Then why do you give me such a hard time about my life choices?
This thread was not even about my life choices; I was just trying to give advice to the OP.
I am not making any false assumptions. It is a fact that if I commuted to NYC, I would have less free time than I do now. It is a fact that commuting on the LIRR every day costs more than just driving a few miles to work every day. Those are both indisputable.
It is a fact that people I know in my field in NYC work longer hours, pay more for health insurance, and have fewer vacation days and paid holidays than I have. That is a more gray area since obviously I don't know every single person in my field, but I am just basing it on what I know.

One more question, would you consider relocation perhaps? I am single and rent, so I do have the flexibility to move if I wanted to to say western nassau or queens to shorten my possible commute.
I am in Huntington right now and love it because of all the stores on 110 and the great village area, but If I could move to a similar area in Nassau or Queens say like Great Neck or Forest Hills or an area like that, then the commute would not be so bad, and I would also save money by reducing the LIRR expense. If I go to Queens I could possibly even just take the subway, and bypass the LIRR altogether.
What do you guys think of that option? Worth it for a 10K to max 12K raise?
