Essentially, most people's opinion were pretty much as predicted. People accredited the black valedictorian's good grades to "affirmative action" when he did indeed rightfully earn the title. Affirmative Action is completely irrelevant in this case, no matter what spin you put on it....... Even though racism isn't the same as it was in the 1960's, it definitely does still exist in various subtle forms; and i'm glad this annoying and condescending form of racism can be exposed. People will use affirmative action to discredit any individual achievement of a black person; whether it's getting into a good school, landing a decent job, getting a good grade in class or having anything nice in life.
Simple solution to this problem: Ban any form of affirmative action and no minority recipient of a job, scholarship, award etc. will ever be called on being an AA beneficiary again. This is a side effect of the PC crowd's own doing. Merit should be determined by one thing: Merit. Not the color of one's skin, it should have no bearing whatsoever.

The irony of the situation is that minorites [blacks/hispanics] aren't even the main beneficiaries of affirmative action. White women have benefitted the most from Affirmative Action and this is a well-documented (but vastly-ignored) fact.
Harvard's AVERAGE SAT for admittance was between 2120-2390/2400; which means he is well within Harvard's average SAT for admittance.
He did even better compared to the average SAT's of the other Ivy Leagues: Yale avg. SAT: 2,210-2,380/2,400 Princeton avg. SAT: 2,120-2,390/2,400 Columbia avg. SAT: 2,100-2,360/2,400 Dartmouth avg SAT: 2,030-2,350/2,400 UPenn avg. SAT: 2,030-2,310/2,400 Brown avg. SAT: 1,990-2,310/2,400 (CornellU not available but known to be less selective of the ivy leagues)

They did this with the NYC specialized high schools, where entrance is completely color blind and 100% merit based on the entrance exam.
Now they are complaining there are too many asians... there is a thread going on in the NYC forum.

Well I say that's tough. If the best of the best academically happen to be majority Asian then that's the way it is. Who ever said life is fair?? Everyone else who applied to that school had an equal shot if their grades didn't measure up? Oh well.
What's important is an equal chance. Not an equal outcome.
Liberals? 90% of the posts on this thread are from right wingers circle ******* each other. Talk about a strawman. Go back to your talk radio now.
The kids SAT scores were where they should be...the fact that he graduated 11th in WF isn't that great. A school of that size normally has kids in the top 5 going to Ivys.

Afterall, we're all equal... isn't that what Obama said?

So it's your position that a URM from Floyd has an "equal chance" in life as a white kid from Cold Spring Harbor? Interesting theory.
I love how this totally grey issue is made black and (vs?) white on here. None of the arguments are mutually exclusive. Yes, he likely gets an advantage for being a minority. Yes, his SAT scores and grades put him in legit contention. He's also a shot putter (student athlete), sings baritone and plays viola in the orchestra. So basically this kid is the perfect storm of an Ivy candidate and likely would have gotten in regardless. Doesn't mean that the Ivys (and other) schools don't have written or unwritten quotas for minority admissions. This kid likely didn't need any affirmative action but of course it still exists. Whether it played a part no one but the admissions office will ever know. Congratulations to him. I hope they pony up some scholarship money too! None of those schools are cheap!
