You really are surprised by this? You know this is Long island right... The most segregated place I've ever seen.

How is a kid from Floyd going to pay for an Ivy league education?
Financial aid. At many (if not all) Ivies, kids whose families make less than a certain amount (I believe it's $60K) attend entirely for free because the school meets their financial need with grants (which don't have to be repaid) rather than loans (which would have to be repaid).
Having seen the student this evening on the news I was happy that when he spoke it was clear and understandable...
What were you expecting? An ebonics-filled grammatically incorrect rant complete with "shout-outs" to his buds and his hands flashing gang signs? Really now!

Really... "entirely for free"? What grants provide that?!!? You're pushing what... a couple hundred K to an Ivy over 4 years?
$60k is piddly for LI - no matter what schools you're talking about.

Entirely for free! Crazy right? It's the only way Ivies and other higher ed institutions sitting on billions of endowment cash can justify their tax exempt status (current IRS rules qualify them as charitable organizations). Harvard alone reports $30 billion of endowment assets.
Just want to add....we should all be celebrating that our Island is in the spotlight for a GOOD reason. Bunch of sourpusses we are lol, can't just be happy.

From Princeton's website (http://www.princeton.edu/admission/financialaid/):
"Financial Aid Without Loans
Princeton has a long history of providing access through financial aid for qualified students. For more than three decades, we've considered students for admission to Princeton without concern over their families' ability to pay — and offered aid to cover 100 percent of each admitted student’s need.
In 2001, Princeton became the first university to offer every aid recipient a financial aid package that replaces loans with grant aid (scholarships) that students do not pay back. Since then, Princeton has been able to enroll growing numbers of students from low- and middle-income backgrounds with the grant aid they need to make our costs affordable. Our financial aid program is one of the best in the country, helping to bring an exceptional and diverse group of students to Princeton each year."

I agree with this. I am sure there were Asians and Whites with the same or slightly lesser qualifications that got into the Ivies this year. That he happened to get accepted to all 8 was serendipity, a "fortuitous happenstance." If this was a white kid from one of the top school districts on LI nobody would bat an eye over this story! As for the school he was from, this kid was quality material if he was from any school. He also had good family support and the examples and guidance of uncles and cousins who went to Ivies before him. I could see yelling about "Affirmative Action" cheating only if he were someone with a 5th grade reading level who did math by counting on his fingers and toes. Does anyone think he is going to "waste" the spot in whichever Ivy he ends up enrolling in? No! Let's be real here and congratulate the kid for his hard work!

Grants from the schools themselves, which are flush with endowments and are dedicated to helping students who do not come from money be able to attend also. Do some research before you come here and shout and scream (?!?!?!) assumptions about things you obviously have neither experience nor any knowledge about.
