Again for me not worth the risk. Of course nowhere is 100% safe from anything, but seeing what is capable here from only a Cat 1 or Cat 2, I'm living as far inland as I possibly can.
This winter I believe is very indicative of changing weather patterns. We have been pretty lucky with the exception of Sandy but that is changing and I do believe we are due for a bigger one soon although I hope not.
Sandy beat the crap out of Oceanside. Parts of Merrick fared ok. I am sure there are parts of Oceanside that may have been ok but I believe in general Merrick is a safer bet in this scenario for the OP.
I'm shocked you're not grasping this. You're usually pretty sharp! Let's try again: if you're elevated enough THERE IS NO RISK of flooding. Comprende?

This is good to know. I did not think of this thoroughly. I usually don't live overly cautious and paranoid about storms as I'm born/raised in Miami FL where we would get hit multiple times a year. No matter where you lived, you were pretty fine. We were in the middle of the heat during Andrew and the house fell apart but that was once in 25 years that I lived there.
But NY is different. Not equipped for that. And in my home searches, I'll try to be more aware. Thanks. I do LOVE Oceanside though

Agreed!! Seriously, jdawg, I am surprised at your alarmist views. You do realize that if NY were faced with a mega Cat 1 storm, no one on the Island would be spared? All of Manhattan and Long Island is surrounded by water!! I love how you guys are debating the merits of living in Oceanside v. Merrick - its like asking prisoners at Rikers Island whether they would rather eat steak or shrimp for dinner, either way, they are all in the same rotten place!!!

No I said I would live inland around Hicksville. Merrick SOMR isnt ideal but IMO better than Oceanside.

The thing is FL knows how to deal with these types of things and many homes & bldgs there are equipped to withstand winds like that. Homes here arent.
Plus, we don't hafta worry about escaped komodo dragons and pythons running wild and eating our children.
Florida has a lot of missing children that are being eaten by snakes and lizards and stuff that got loose during Andrew.

Wow, if major CAT 1 will do this damage, I wonder what stronger CAT 2-5 would do? Makes you wonder......
