I'm curious for those who have moved off of Long Island who have done social work or psychology work if there are any issues with getting your permit transfer to another state. The only thing holding us back and keeping us on Long Island is going to be her license to teach in New York state. Also she wants to live near family but if she sees that it's just not feasible to live on Long Island Way that we want to I think she might consider moving somewhere else probably not too far. I personally wouldn't mind North Carolina. Or some other places like that. Maybe the outskirts of Pittsburgh. That would be my choice.
So does anyone have any experience with this and how long it takes? She's currently going for 3000 hours and is about halfway there.
Your fiancee should look up the requirements for any potential states that you are considering for relocation. I think it's not that terribly difficult for licensed psychologists with a PH.D. but not sure about social workers. Every state is very different. HOwever, sooner is better than later. Better to get it all out of the way while she is in school and has access to her current professors if she needs any sort of written documentation from them and if she needs to take any sort of tests, while her memory is still fresh and she is still used to taking exams. You might also suggest that she post her questions in the work forum and see if anyone else with a NYS license in her field moved to a different state.
Good call. Some of the places that come to mind that I would like to look into would be places like Maryland or Delaware or Pennsylvania or North Carolina. I'm realizing how expensive it is to live in New York but the same time the cost-of-living is probably much less in those places so it's probably far less for houses too.
She's honestly looking at it as a last resort to live off of Long Island because she wants to be close to family. Hell if I could find a job somewhere else I pays just as much and has lower taxes and a more comfortable way of living I'm hundred percent down to do it and just pack up and go. She on the other hand is different.
Find a state you are interested in and call the state dept of licensing and ask that question.
Agree and do it soon. Have her do whatever needs to be done NOW - she can get licensed wherever she needs or wants to be licensed RIGHT NOW instead of waiting and then it's just a matter of CE to keep up the licenses elsewhere. No harm at all in her getting her license in more than one state.
Great point and I should have thought about the CE credits....shame on me.
