Can anyone tell me if a Suffolk Police Officer or Detective receives free legal services after they retire?

I didn't think they received free legal services before they retired, so I'm not sure why they would after. (Unless you're talking about being represented in cases where they're being sued in their capacity as police officers, but that's not really "free legal services," that's an employer defending its employees in specific circumstances that occur in the course of employment.)

You would be better off contacting the PBA

Why don't you just use your massive pension to pay for legal service?

I'm inclined to say no. Depending on what legal services are used while they are on the job such as a defense attorney, more than likely, if they aren't indemnified, the union will probably spring for one. Other than that, free services are considered a gratuity. I believe they pay for legal services (e.g. closing on a house, estate planning, etc.) like everyone else.

Teaching unions offer free or discounted legal services as a benefit depending on the service, it has nothing to do with being in trouble on the job, it's just a perk. I'm pretty sure if the teachers union has it, the police have it and in an even better form, as goes with most benefit when comparing the 2.

I would think that the PBA would be the best bet for you. Legal services (as stated previously) are usually provided to members by a union, not so much the entity hiring them, unless (as also stated) the need for legal services is for something connected to the performance of duties while employed.

If you're looking for HR-218 (LEOSA) coverage, you can get that through the FOP if the PBA doesn't provide it.
