Tj2013- not sure where you are getting your facts from but do you have kids in the district? Sachem is a big district but the graduating classes are not much bigger then many of the surrounding districts. Now that they have 2 high schools the size of each high school is not that big. Plus Big can go either way.... Many opportunities for extra curricular activities or a chance to get lost in the shuffle. We like the elementary school and think it is great. I heard the middle school is rated good. Was just concerned with the high school. So if your kids go to the high school I would prefer your opinions. We do not know anyone with kids in the high school. We are very involved parents but I know now is the time to move if we need to. I have always loved Sayville. But to move and renovate a house again is not on our list of things we are dying to do.

Sayville schools aren't all they are cracked up to be. My boss has kids in the SD and she's not overly thrilled. They definitely have their share of drug issues and the budget there is becoming an issue. Sayville has some pretty sketchy areas as well. Smithtown has a crazy drug problem right now. You cannot move away from it. Sachem is like any other SD--be involved in your kids life and they will turn out fine. Their middle schools just went up to a 9 rating on greatschools. Are they the best of the best? No, but keep in mind your kids are not just a product of the schools.

This is not completely accurate. Sachem school taxes are lower than almost all other school districts in Brookhaven. See the tax rates for yourself here: http://www.brookhaven.org/Forms.aspx...d&EntryId=5707

Sachem has a tax rate of 189 per $100 of assessed value. The only ones lower than that are Port Jefferson, Riverhead, and Fire Island.

This doesn't mean taxes are "low" but they are lower than most other districts in Brookhaven.

The pill/heroin thing is island wide, unfortunately, from the worst to the best school districts, there is a problem.

Sachem is a BIG school system but not a good or great one! Don't be fooled by size in believing the biggest district is the best, its definitely not. There also a huge heroin and pill problem in the area especially with the kids. The area is turning into junky- ville, crime is increasing, a dam shame, it used to be very quiet, safe and secure but the times are changing.
You get what you put into it. Involved parents will get successful children....

Sachem is a middle class area, with areas from lower to upper middle class, you get the same result in the schools.

All LI teachers/admins are paid well. Compared to other districts, Sachem is on the lower end of the scale given its size and # of kids.

the drug problem is EVERYWHERE! Do not be fooled. One Smithtown HS is call the PHARM, as in Pharmacy.....

don't forget the Sachem teacher student sex scandals, nothing like raising star footballs players to have them sexually abused by Sachem female teachers. Whatever happened to those two? were they fired and shown the door or did they both get promoted and rewarded for that outrageous misconduct?

Sachem probably like many districts has many scandals, and political BS that goes on with hiring relatives, friends, and those part of the inner circle.

IMO Sachem isn't the optimal choice but it sounds like the other choices kinda suck too, so its a hard position to be in.

Those scandals happen all over. Politics are in every district. Honestly it's how well most of them cover up the corruption. There is no perfect district. Neighboring districts that are much worse like Pat-Med and Bellport are producing smart, well rounded, college ready kids. Point being is that good kids are like cream and rise to the top...anywhere.

this is a sad statement given the sheer amount of taxes that LIers pay to the schools. For the price per student that schools on LI spend, they should all be valedictorians.

I actually live in Sachem school district and taxes aren't high. Pretty much every house we looked at in the 200k-300k range had taxes under 7k. (It's crazy that on Long Island, 7k isn't considered high).

There are problems in every school district. Doesn't matter if its upper or lower class, every school district has their own drug, sex or test scandals.

Since moving out here, I found the community to be a solid middle, working class community. Neighbors are friendly, all the activities in the community draw parents and their kids. I see kids outside right now riding their bike, their skateboard, even their 4 wheelers. I see parents walking with their kids.
