Boy isn't that the truth. Meanwhile NYC is exploding with construction.

To the poster that said the MTA actually stands to SAVE money from a strike - you hit the nail on the head. If their workers don't work and the trains don't run and the people still have to pay for their monthly tickets, where are they actually being harmed? It's not like we can boycott the only method of transportation available to us.

THIS is the reason I am against a strike. I'm not against a strike for the sheer purpose of taking away their negotiating tools, but I am against it because the only true victims are the riders - who also pay all these salaries. I think it's time unions find another way to get what they're after here.

Thank you for agreeing. Public employee strikes (including employees of publicly owned companies such as the LIRR) only hurt the public that relies on them. This same public is generally powerless to make a difference. This is why public employee strikes are often illegal.

The Taylor law ties the hands of the employees. They have no ultimate action against their employer for refusing to act in good faith, which is partially why the Triborough Ammendment was written so that an 'expired' contract continues in force until re-negotiated. This compels the employer (Cuty, State, etc) to negotiate.

I have to agree here as well. But the Taylor law does provide for binding arbitration which does put some pressure on both parties to come to a mutual agreement. The Railway Labor Act doesnt force binding arbitration, both sides must agree to it.

I just read in Newsday that unemployement is at a five year low on Long Island.

This article is the top 10 hardest jobs in America to fill. Guess whats number 1. Skilled trades. These are the majority of the people walking off the job at the LIRR not conductors. #5 #7 and #8 all walking as well. The thought that these workers can be replaced is not the reality. this is also a very specialised feild where although the job skills do transfer from related feilds there is still a learning curve. Machinists in and electronics technicians in particular are hard to find. Certified welders also in high demand around the country.

The 10 Hardest Jobs To Fill In 2014 - Forbes

Railroad Job Vacancies Reported to the RRB

These jobs are hiring all over the country so where are all these highly qualified replacements. How come they havent already been hired. The LIRR has been hiring nonstop for years trying to keep up its numbers. MetroNorth was just quoted in its safety review by the FRA as having a labor shortage problem.

Pay these workers the 2.47% raises that was recomended and move on. Call Cuomo, send an email and let them know this isnt a fight worth having.

Fine. Pay the welders and skilled workers more. Cut the ticket takers and low skilled workers.

What do ticket takers at movie theatres and sporting events make? Call Cuomo and demand equal pay for equal job skills. No more higher pay for public sector.

And for those who say conductors have physically demanding jobs, why are there so many obese ones? The least they have to do is waddle through the aisles....Them striking will result in some unintended consequences for them...with the internet these days, it would be pretty easy to expose the ones who can't control themselves in front of unruly passengers.
All you have to do is wear a lanyard and put something that may or may not be a ticket in a plastic case on the end of it. When the conductor comes around, just act like you're all into reading your paper and wave it at them. They'll just say "thank you" and keep moving.

Once again Cuomo is MIA with this just like with Sandy. A strike will cripple Long Island. Andrew Cuomo should GOVERN and solve this impasse!
The MTA's contingency plan is a joke. You better plan on getting a comfy pair of sneakers because it will be faster to WALK where you need to go!
This isn't the 1980s, alot more ppl take the LIRR and the roads are more jammed than ever. Funny fact though, a Cuomo was governor back then too.
Cuomo has been such a terrible governor for Long Islanders. He aint getting my vote thats for sure.
