water table in massapequa (living in, floor, yard)

Hello: I've been living in Biltmore Shores since 1977. When we first moved in, I noticed there was always some water in the basement sump, especially in the spring when there was a lot of rain. Over the years, the water disappeared, due in part to everyone connecting to the sewer system, and the water table lowering. The only times we had a problem , was after several days of heavy rain resulting in a water table rise and water in basements. This would go away after a week or so as the water leached out and flowed into the bay. In fact, there were several years where we had dry sumps.
Walker Field, near the Southern State Pkwy. used to have a lake there, which dried up years ago.
A few weeks ago, I noticed the basement was damp and there was water in the sump. Also there was a small puddle of water in the yard next to the house. Expecting to find a leaky pipe somewhere. I checked all outside connections and along the foundation for wet spots. Nothing turned up and I passed it off as a rise in the ground water even though there hadn't been heavy rain recently. In a few days, the basement was dry again, with no sump water.
Today, 6/25, I noticed a cardboard box on the floor that was wet on the bottom. Checking the sump and sure enough there was a 1/2" of water in it. We haven't had that much rain to warrant a rise in ground water.
I've been reading about the toxic plume from the old Grumman property and how it's threatening the wells in the Massapequa Water District. Also read that the District would release water into the preserve to raise ground water. This was stopped when water inundated bicycle paths and walking trails. They still release water to the recharge basins though. There was talk of drilling wells to monitor and stem the plume by injection. Just wondering if all this is connected to the rise in the water table. Any one else out there experiencing a problem with ground water?
